Open Boot was Sun's (and the original) implementation of the Open Firmware specification, a standard for the firmware that lies between the hardware and operating system in a modern computing platform. Open Firmware was standardised as IEEE 1275, but since 1998 was not reaffirmed by the IEEE and was officially withdrawn as a standard.
As part of Sun's OpenSPARC programme, Sun made the sources to the Open Boot PROM available under a MIT/BSD-style license.
The Open Boot PROM release included in version 1.3 of OpenSPARC T1
