4DOS was a replacement for command.com on MS-DOS
and compatible systems. It enchanced the built-in command
interpreter with a number of additional features, including
aliasing and command-line editing support without requiring an
additional utility, colour-coded directory listings, support for
REXX in batch files, and many more.
In 2006, 4DOS 7.50.1 was released as open source under a modified MIT license, limiting the distribution of compiled versions to those for use on the FreeDOS.
