Kernel Source Archive: Kernels
The Kernel Source Archive contains the sources to a number of
open source operating system kernels.
- CMU Mach
-
Mach was one of the earliest examples of a microkernel-based
operating system, and its various offshoots (including XNU, the
kernel at the heart of Mac OS X) are still widely used today.
- FreeDOS
-
FreeDOS is free version of the DOS operating system, released
under the terms of the GNU General Public License and almost
100% compatible with Microsoft's MS-DOS.
- GNU Mach
-
GNU Mach is a fork of the University of Utah's Mach 4 project,
which continued development of CMU Mach
when development at CMU ended after the release of CMU Mach 3.0.
- MkLinux
-
MkLinux was a project jointly instigated by the Open Software
Foundation's Research Institute and Apple Computer to port the
Linux kernel to the Mach microkernel on Apple's PowerPC
hardware.
- OSF Mach
-
OSF Mach was originally the OSF's variant of CMU's Mach 2.5,
but was later updated with sources from the CMU Mach 3.0 releases.
OSF Mach formed basis of OSF/1 (now HP's Tru64 UNIX) and
MkLinux, and portions
of OSF Mach are present in XNU, the Mach-based kernel of Mac OS X
and Darwin.
